Product Feature Development & Design: BeReal Streak for Authentic Social Interaction

I worked on a product feature development and design focused on improving user engagement on BeReal while maintaining the platform’s core principle of authenticity. I analyzed user behavior and identified a retention problem common to social media platforms: maintaining consistent daily participation without encouraging addictive scrolling or competitive metrics.

To address this, I designed a BeReal Streak feature, inspired by streak systems like those used in Snapchat, but adapted to align with BeReal’s values of realness and low-pressure interaction. The feature encourages users to consistently share authentic moments while avoiding elements that promote social comparison or unhealthy engagement patterns.

BeReal is a social media platform designed to promote authenticity and real-life sharing. Unlike traditional social platforms that rely on filters, curated content, and algorithm-driven feeds, BeReal encourages users to post unfiltered photos once a day within a limited time window. The platform aims to reduce social comparison, discourage doomscrolling, and foster genuine connections through spontaneous and authentic content.
