Overview

I lead SEO and Google Ads for a U.S. multi-location dental group spanning 45+ office locations. Dental is one of the most competitive local-search categories in the U.S. — every practice fights for the same “dentist near me,” “dental implants,” and city-specific searches. My job is to turn that search demand into real patient acquisition: phone calls, direction requests, and website visits — while getting ahead of the shift toward AI-powered search results.

The Challenge

  • Many location pages ranked on Page 2–3 or didn’t rank at all for their highest-intent local keywords.
  • Google Business Profiles were under-optimized, limiting Map Pack visibility for “near me” searches — where most local patients actually convert.
  • Search itself was changing: Google AI Overviews and AI assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity) were starting to answer patient questions directly, and the practices had no visibility in those surfaces.
  • With 45+ locations, everything had to be systematic and measurable — not one-off fixes.

My Approach

1. On-page & technical SEO, built to scale

  • Rewrote and structured location and service pages around high-intent local keywords (city + service), with clean title/meta/heading hierarchies and internal linking.
  • Fixed technical foundations — indexing, sitemaps, and page speed — so pages could actually compete.

2. Local SEO & Google Business Profile

  • Optimized Google Business Profiles and built consistent local citations to strengthen Map Pack rankings for “dentist near me” queries.
  • Treated the GBP as a conversion asset, not a listing — the goal was calls and directions, not just impressions.

3. AEO / GEO — optimizing for AI search

  • Implemented FAQ and LocalBusiness structured data and rewrote content in an answer-first format so pages could be pulled into Google AI Overviews and cited by AI assistants.
  • Applied entity optimization so each practice was clearly understood by search engines and generative-AI systems.

4. Measurement & reporting

  • Built keyword-ranking dashboards tracking 40+ target keywords and 11+ local competitors per location to guide strategy and report to stakeholders.

Ranking wins (selected)

  • Denison Dental (TX): drove all 12 tracked keywords onto Google Page 1, with 8 in the local Top 3 (#1–#3).
  • Pecan Grove Dental (Sherman, TX): moved “Dentist in Sherman TX” from #9 to #3 and lifted 3 keywords from Page 2–3 onto Page 1.
  • Recovered non-ranking keywords into visibility: “Cosmetic Dentist Portland TX” (unranked → Page 1, #6) and “Dental Implant Service Albuquerque, NM” (unranked → Page 1, #7).

Key Takeaway

The wins that mattered most weren’t rankings for their own sake — they were the calls and directions those rankings produced. By combining classic local SEO with early AEO/GEO work, I helped these practices show up in both traditional Google results and the AI-driven surfaces that are quickly becoming where patients search. That dual visibility — Map Pack and AI Overviews — is where local search is heading, and it’s the edge I build for every location I manage.

I ran this across 45+ dental locations, and each tool had a specific job. Google Search Console was my source of truth — I used it to find which keywords were stuck on Page 2–3, track impressions and clicks per location, and monitor the new Generative AI features report to measure visibility inside Google AI Overviews. Google Analytics (GA4) told me what happened after the click — which pages held attention and drove action. SEMrush and Screaming Frog powered the technical and keyword side — auditing crawl/indexing issues, researching high-intent local keywords, and tracking competitors per location. For AEO/GEO (AI search), I implemented FAQ and LocalBusiness schema, rewrote content in an answer-first format, and applied entity optimization so each practice was clearly understood by Google's AI Overviews and by assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity — which drove 2,400+ AI-search impressions across locations. Finally, Looker Studio turned it all into keyword-ranking dashboards (40+ keywords, 11+ competitors per location) so stakeholders could see progress at a glance, and Google Ads ran alongside SEO to capture high-intent patient searches immediately. The throughline: every tool pointed at one goal — turning search demand into booked patients.
